The Saatchi Gallery
Telegraph.co.uk - Jan 22, 2012
It seems fitting that as a blockbuster show of David Hockney's new landscapes opened at the Royal Academy, a young artist who calls herself his "biggest fan" should win the 2011 Saatchi Gallery/Sunday Telegraph "Art Prize for Schools".

History of the Saatchi Gallery
Forward-thinking, trailblazing, and fearless, collector Charles Saatchi opened the Saatchi Gallery in London in 1985 and has since launched the careers of hundreds of young artists, and has had an immeasurable influence on contemporary art for over twenty years. This comprehensive, elegantly produced book, the first volume to chronicle the history of the gallery, presents the work by 150 of the most important artists exhibited there. From Lucien Freud to Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Brice Marden, Cindy Sherman, Cy Twombly and beyond, .

Abstract America
A radical new generation of American abstract painters has emerged in the twenty-first century. Whereas their predecessors advanced abstraction in the shadow of the Cold War, this new generation arose at the cusp of the transition to the digital era and is marked by the traumatic events surrounding 9/11 and its ongoing social and political aftermath. In these shifting times the artist’s alter ego might well be the DJ—brushstrokes are replaced by "riffs" while "old school" palettes are discarded for "Teletubby purple" or "bubble gum pink".

Shape of Things to Come: New Sculpture
by: Saatchi Gallery
Published in conjunction with the opening of the new Saatchi Gallery in London, one of today’s most important institutions collecting and exhibiting contemporary art, this mammoth book is the most comprehensive volume on contemporary sculpture. The title itself refers to H. G. Wells’s eponymous novel which envisioned the future and was a surprisingly accurate prophecy reflecting the author’s own time. That book inspired Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which a great monolith is an iconic but enigmatic sculptural presence.

THE OPENING OF THE NEW SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON
The new Saatchi Gallery opened its doors for the first time on Tuesday evening, with celebrities and art world stars arriving in their droves for the art event of the season. The 70000 sq ft gallery was packed by 7pm with a queue quickly forming along the King's Road. Guests such as Mica Parish, Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk and Ruby Wax joined collectors Anita Zabludowicz, Ivor Braka and Daria Zhukova to see the new gallery and inaugural exhibition of Chinese contemporary art. Julian Schnabel, whose paintings are on display in the Phillips de Pury & Company space on the third floor of the gallery, flew in from New York for the event, and Lily Allen and Nigella Lawson posed for photographers among the wheelchair-bound old men of Sun Yuan and Peng Yu's installation.

The Saatchi Gallery 100
Art that was "headbuttingly impossible to ignore" is how Charles Saatchi describes the work that intrigued him as he started to collect British art in the early 1990s. Damien Hirst's giant shark in formaldehyde, Tracey Emin's unmade bed and a chilling portrait of Myra Hindley by Marcus Harvey are among the artworks that have since become icons of the decade. The Saatchi Gallery, now in the former County Hall in London, is a permanent home for a changing selection of Saatchi's world-famous collection. The Saatchi Gallery 100 is a fast-paced and fascinating film featuring one hundred of these artworks, accompanied by reflections and anecdotes from the artists themselves. Sarah Lucas' confrontational self-portraits are among the highlights, as are the bold paintings of Gary Hume, photographs by Richard Billingham, sculptures of genetically mutated children by Jake and Dinos Chapman, and many more. Like the collection itself, the film offers a unique understanding of why London has become the centre of the international art world over the past decade - and how art in Britain continues to surprise and challenge and delight.

Saatchi Gallery Talk : New Directions in Contemporary Photography
New Directions in Contemporary Photography Charlotte Cotton, Anne Hardy, Clarisse D'Arcimoles and Aaron Schuman in conversation 7.30pm, Monday 17 January 2011 www.saatchigallery.com One of the great paradigm shifts in contemporary art over the past 20 years has been the movement of photography into the realm of fine art. The critical and commercial success of artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky, who are represented by contemporary art galleries, and the appointment of photography curators to top public galleries such as Tate Modern and Guggenheim, has ensured that the medium is increasingly regarded as a vital part of contemporary artistic practice. With digital techniques of manipulation becoming more and more advanced, photography stands to continually develop and change as a tool for artists. Given that the first photograph was produced in 1826, why did it take so long for photography to be accepted by the art world? How reliable is a photograph as evidence of the real world? What makes a documentary photograph different from a 'fine art' photograph? How will the increasing impact of digital manipulation impact upon the medium? What might the future developments in photography be? These are some of the questions that curator Charlotte Cotton, photographers Anne Hardy and Clarisse D'Arcimoles and Aaron Schuman will discuss as they explore the most pressing questions regarding photography today. Speakers Aaron Schuman Aaron Schuman is a ...
